Howscales Holiday Cottages

At last the days are getting longer and we can look forward to some warmer weather. The spring bulbs are struggling through despite the recent cold snap.

Howscale's Spring 2008 Newsletter

Welcome to Howscales Spring Newsletter and just what a start to Spring! This was the surprising but beautiful scene on Easter Sunday!!!!

Easter 2008

Kirkoswald Church always looks its best in the Springtime . A flagged path – called the Priests Walk- runs through an avenue of trees leading to the old church of St Oswald. Oswald was a 7th Century King of Northumbria and is well recognised in northern church dedications. Though dating back in part from Norman times, much of the present church is more recent. It boasts a number of graves dating back to Saxon Times. On the outside wall is St Oswald’s Well, with a chained cup for drinking the spring water.

There is plenty of historic interest around Kirkoswald to explore and see. There is the unusual Bell Tower above the Church and not far away the remains of the Castle aswell as the reminders when Kirkoswald was a prosperous mill and rural centre.

One of the best ways of exploring the area is on foot and there are a lot of lovely walks to be found. For those who prefer to cycle the new Eden Valley Cycle routes takes in some of the most beautiful stretches of countryside and Howscales is only a mile from the C2C Cycle route.

One of my favourite walks is the Raven Beck walk which is a circular route from Howscales through the pretty hamlet of Parkhead then along the Raven Beck, passing the Mill race into Kirkoswald. Then its through the village, unless you choose to stop for refreshments at either the Crown or the Fethers, and along the road past the castle back up to Howscales. It will not be long before the woods along the Raven Beck are carpeted with bluebells. A pity you cannot smell the heady scent from this photograph.

If you do not feel energetic then Howscales is just the place to relax in and you do not need to leave the comfort of your cottage to admire the beautiful countryside and see the wonderful views from here. All the cottages have extensive information packs to help you plan your stay however short or long. Its an ideal base to explore the unspoilt Eden Valley, Pennines, Lakes, Borders and the Lakes.

I look forward to welcoming you here to Howscales soon
